Café Chat

Practice conversational English.

Café Chat is a fortnightly café in the church hall where those wanting to practice their English language skills can come and do so in a relaxed and informal setting.

What is Café Chat?

The underpinning philosophy is that during the designated opening periods people can “come when they want, stay for as long as they like”. There is no cost for those who participate. Church members volunteer to attend to provide Café customers with conversational opportunities.

What do I do?

Come to St James’ Presbyterian Church and sign at the door. You’ll be given a nametag and then you are invited to sit down at the table. One of our waiters will come and ask what you want to have — coffee, tea, milkshakes, hot chocolate. We encourage people to bring their families and their children if they can. All are welcome.

Where is it?

Café Chat is held twice a month on Mondays, 10am–12pm, at St James Presbyterian Church, Matthews Ave.

When it is on?

The Café is open each fortnight on Mondays from 10 am – 12 noon. The next sessions are:

“Even though a lot of these people here today are learning English through the TAFE, that is more formal English — the focus is on reading and writing. Café Chat gives them a chance to practice what they are learning in a conversational style, with native English speakers in a natural setting.”
