Who is Jesus?

Who is Jesus?

Jesus is the single most important figure in human history. He was a real man who lived in Judea (modern Israel) around 2000 years ago. The events of his life - his birth, his teachings, his miracles, his death on a cross and his resurrection have shaped the history of world.

The Bible says that Jesus is God’s son (Mark 1:11). He is both fully God and fully man at the same time (John 1:1-4, 14). Why is this important? Because Jesus came into this world to save it (John 3:16, Philippians 2:6-10). This is the heart of the Christian message.

Why did Jesus come?

It doesn’t take much to see that this world isn’t right. There is pain, sickness, suffering and death. People hurt each other. The entire world is not as it should be (Romans 8:20-23). But it didn’t start off this way.

In fact when the world began, God said that it was very good (Genesis 1:31). But humans wanted to rule instead of live under God’s rule. So they sinned (Genesis 3:1-7). When that happened, the entire world broke. We broke our relationship with God. But even despite humanity’s failure, God never gave up on us.

The message of Gospel, is that God sent his Son Jesus into the world to rescue it from itself. Jesus himself lived a perfect life on your behalf (Romans 3:22-25). He then suffered and died for you and on behalf of everyone so that the world can one day be made new (Revelation 21:1). But the story doesn’t end with an innocent man being publicly executed. On Easter Sunday, Jesus rose to life, proving that he is God and showing that he is King over all things (Matthew 28:5-6 & 18-20). The curse of sin was dealt with by Jesus himself (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Why does this matter?

The Bible teaches that none of us can make ourselves right with God on our own (Romans 3:23). None of us can save ourselves. Without Jesus, we all stand condemned and deserving of judgement. But the good news of he Bible is that Jesus did it for you. He paid your debt so that you could be free to live as one of God’s children. All you have to do is believe that Jesus is the Son of God, that he died for your sins and was resurrected (Romans 10:9-10).

So how does God deal with the problem of sin?

Here is the incredible thing: The Bible tells us that at the crucifixion of Jesus, God’s anger at human sin landed squarely on Jesus (Romans 3:25). The Bible tells us that ‘Christ died for our sins’ (1 Corinthians 15:3). This is why God suffered and died, in Jesus Christ. God directed his anger, his anger at human sin, at himself.

The Bible says ‘the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus’ (Romans 6:23). In Jesus, God not only offers forgiveness to all who trust in Christ, he offers us the greatest gift in the universe; being with him, forever (Revelation 21:1-4).
